Canoeing in the 1964 Summer Olympics
This Czechoslovakia stamp features a person canoeing. Canoe slalom is a thrilling and challenging sport that involves navigating a canoe or kayak through a course of upstream and downstream gates. From the origins of modern canoe slalom in the 1930s to its Olympic debut in 1972, the sport has come a long way. Versions of canoe slalom have been practiced for hundreds of years, but today’s athletes use a combination of skill, strength, endurance and agility as they battle for victory.
It was a momentous occasion for the sport, as it meant that athletes from around the world could compete to become Olympic champions. Canoeing featured five events: two slalom events and three flat water events.
The canoeing events included sprint and slalom events for both men and women, with each gender competing in separate categories. Competitors were judged on their speed, agility and accuracy as they navigated a rectangular course with up to 19 sets of gates.
