How to Mount Stamps

There are a few different methods of mounting stamps. It is best to find the one that works best for you and your stamps. It is essential that you should take every precaution you can to get it right and not damage your collection.

Mounting Stamps with Hinges

The first method is to use stamp hinges. Stamp hinges are small pieces of paper with adhesive on one side. They are used for attaching stamps to an album page. The hinge is placed on the back of the stamp, and then the stamp is attached to the album page. This method is quick and easy, but it can damage the stamp if not done properly.

When mounting stamps, always use the best quality peelable hinges, never stamp edging or gummed paper. If you use these alternatives, it is highly likely that you will damage the stamp.

It is advised that there be only one way to correctly mount stamps, and essential that you should take every precaution you can to get it right and not damage your collection.

Method for Mounting Stamps with Hinges

  1. Fold the hinge about one-third of the way down, adhesive side upwards
  2. Lightly moisten the top part and affix it to the upper part of the stamp in the centre
  3. Lightly moisten the remaining part of the hinge, which should be standing away from the stamp
  4. Place the stamp in its space

When you are collecting mint stamps (unused) take extra care to not moisten the back of the stamp, or it will stick down too firmly on the page. This may lead to a difficult time of removing or which may lead to tearing the stamp. If you have used good quality stamp hinges and used them correctly, you will find it effortless to remove them. Be sure that if you do try and remove the stamp that the hinge has completely dried, so you can avoid any damage.

Using Stamp Mounts

Another way to mount stamps is by using stamp mounts. Stamp mounts are small pieces of plastic with an adhesive on one side. The mount is placed on the back of the stamp and then the stamp is attached to the album page. This method does not damage the stamp, but it can be more time-consuming than using hinges.

Method for Using Stamp Mounts

  • Fold the mount about 1/4 inch so that the small folded part can be stuck to the back of the stamp
  • Apply only a little moisture and affix the stamp for the page with only a slight pressure
  • The mount will peel easily off the page when dry, if you wish to swap out a stamp or find you have mounted it win the wrong place

Many stamp mounts come pre-cut to size and made from acid-free materials. Davo Easy, a paper-mount range developed in the Netherlands, is the first ever self-adhesive stamp-mount variety. The mount is straightforward to use and does not require water, a sponge, or a rag. And because of this, the overall quality of the mounts is much better.

Plastic Stamp Mounts

You can purchase a special type of clear plastic stamp holder for stamp mounts. These are little covers with a clear front, either black or clear, which store your stamps clean and safe, but they cost a lot. Unless you invest in exceptional stamps, then use stamp hinges will be enough.

Whether you choose to use stamp hinges or mounts, it is important to follow the instructions correctly. As a collector, you will want your collection to look as professional and aesthetically pleasing as possible.
