1972 Winter Olympic Games, Czechoslovakia Information
The 1972 Winter Olympics, also known as the IX Olympic Winter Games, were held in Sapporo, Japan, from February 3 to February 13, 1972.
The 1972 Winter Olympics, is notable for being the first Winter Olympics to be hosted in an Asian country. The Games also featured a record number of thirty-six nations participating in forty-seven events across six different sports. An impressive total of 1,006 athletes competed at the Olympic Village and venues around the city. A highlight of the event was ski jumping champion Yukio Kasaya’s gold medal victory in the 70 m hill event.
There were 41 competitors and the flag bearer was Jiří Raška – who is considered to be the most famous ski jumper of the 20th century. Jiří Raška is a Czech former cross-country skier who competed during the 1970s and 1980s. He won a bronze medal in the 4×10 km relay at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and also competed in the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics
